Exploring the Last Frontier: An Unforgettable Family Adventure to Alaska

If you're searching for a destination rich in extraordinary landscapes, wildlife encounters, and memorable experiences for all ages, Alaska should be at the top of your list. Our recent family cruise to this incredible corner of the world was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, adventurer, or simply someone looking to unplug and reconnect with your loved ones, Alaska offers something for everyone.  Here are some of the amazing experiences my family had on our recent Alaskan cruise:

Juneau: A Whale Watcher’s Paradise

Our journey began in Alaska’s capital, Juneau. This lovely little city is nestled between the mountains and the pristine waters of the inside passage. One of the highlights here was a whale-watching excursion — a magical experience where we watched humpback whales breach and dive against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glistening glaciers.

Skagway and the Yukon: A Ride Through History and Adventure

In Skagway we boarded the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway for a journey that took us through winding mountain passes deep into the remote Yukon Territory. The train ride offered towering waterfalls, cliffside views, stories of the native peoples, and of the Gold Rush era that made the experience both scenic and educational. But perhaps most exciting for the kids (and adults alike) was meeting the hardy huskies of the Iditarod — dogs built for endurance and loved for their friendly, playful nature. Learning about the legendary race and getting up close with the pups made for an unforgettable stop.

Sailing through Glacier Bay National Park is a truly unforgettable experience, offering a front-row seat to some of Alaska’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Accessible primarily by boat, this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans over 3.3 million acres of pristine wilderness, towering mountain ranges, temperate rainforests, dynamic glaciers, and diverse wildlife habitats. As your vessel glides through the peaceful fjords and icy waters, you'll have the rare opportunity to see glaciers calving - massive chunks of ice dramatically breaking off and crashing into the sea below. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, sea otters, harbor seals, and porpoises swimming alongside your boat. On land, you might spot brown bears foraging along the shoreline, bald eagles soaring overhead, and mountain goats clinging to steep cliffsides. Cruising through Glacier Bay is often a highlight of an Alaska itinerary. National Park rangers accompanied us on our cruise ship to provide educational commentary on the region's geology, glacial history, native culture, and ecological significance.

Ketchikan: Walking Among the Giants

Our adventure continued in Ketchikan, a town surrounded by lush forests and vibrant culture. Here, we laced up our hiking boots for a serene trek through ancient rainforests. Towering trees, moss-covered paths, and the sounds of nature enveloped us as we wandered the trails. It was a moment of tranquility, a chance to slow down and savor the beauty of the outdoors together. The brave (or crazy?) part of the family even snorkeled the waters of Mountain Point, staying warm in thick wetsuits while observing a lush assortment of colorful sea stars, jellyfish, and fishes.

Victoria, British Columbia: A Graceful Ending

While not technically in Alaska, our final stop in Victoria, British Columbia provided the perfect ending to our Northern adventure. With its manicured gardens, historic architecture, and stunning coastal views, Victoria was a striking contrast to the rugged terrain we had come to know — yet it delivered just as much charm.
