  1. Let them pick what attractions you will see. Have them do the research before you go and have them pick the majority of things you will visit. I can't tell you how much fun it is to see things from a kids point of view.
  2. Go to at least 1 art museum, but don't expect the kids to stand there and appreciate all of the art. Make it a game. Have them find the funniest painting, or the one that has the most people in it, etc.. In the end ask them which  one was their favorite  and why?
  3. Bring good walking shoes and pain medicine for everyone. Make sure they know that a lot of walking will be involved.
  4. Don't expect them to finish every meal, but expect them to try it. Most other countries don't offer kids menus. Make the expectations clear before you travel that you expect them to try everything but they don't have to like everything.
  5. Schedule in plenty of down time. You can't expect your kids to go go go. Schedule some afternoon downtime everyday before you head back out for the evening.
  6. Teach them the language basics. Everyone should know - hello, goodbye, please and thank you. Make sure everyone feels comfortable using them.
  7. Give them a daily itinerary - kids do better and are less likely to complain when they know what to expect. When putting together your itinerary have the must-see and the nice to see's. Always leave at least one or two activities as optional each day, that way if the kids or grown-ups are too cranky no one will be upset if they miss is.
  8. Talk about the trip - when you get home don't forget to remind the kids about the awesome things  you did or the amazing food you ate. Kids memories can be fleeting but if you keep reminding them about your travels they will most likely never forget the wonderful family memories.
